Job Title: Lecturer in Business, Travel & Tourism
Salary: £23,037 - £27,285 per annum
Area: A-level, Arts and Professional Studies
Reporting to: Curriculum Area Manager- IT, Business and Travel
Location: Taunton

Job Purpose

The successful candidate will work within our thriving Business Management and Computing department and will provide an innovative and exciting teaching curriculum to 16-18 year olds and potentially adults, inspiring them to achieve to the best of their potential and progress within their chosen career.

You should be proactive and passionate and have the ability deliver across a range of established vocational courses in business and travel. You will equally act as a personal tutor and will support learners pastorally to help them to achieve.

Job Responsibilities

Plan, prepare and teach highly effective lessons ensuring students receive an outstanding learning experience

Prepare and effectively use schemes of work and lesson plans in line with College policies and processes

Share teaching, learning and assessment good practice to enhance the learner experience through a range of activities including, team meetings, Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and College Inspection Review (CIR) processes

Work to ensure high levels of student attendance in all sessions and prompt completion of registers

Prepare cohesive assessment plans to support progress for all learners and track progress to ensure timely success

Set and mark assignments/examinations/assessments as appropriate

Set homework and extension activities, and provide timely feedback to support progress

Provide effective verbal and/or written feedback to support progress in line with awarding organisations’ requirements and College processes

Complete course/programme administration associated with your teaching responsibilities

Facilitate work readiness activities with learners to support their development and progress

Work with learners to support continuous development of their English and maths skills

Maintain teaching files in line with College procedures

Use and apply modern technology to enhance the learning experience for learners e.g. ILT, VLE and specialist software/resources

Work as part of the team to implement the department operating plan in line with the College strategic plan and contribute to strategic planning through meetings and consultation

Essential Criteria

Must be an experienced teacher or educator with sound knowledge of the vocational business and/or travel and tourism curriculum.

Hold a degree and/or professional qualification in a relevant subject area

Demonstrate specialist professional knowledge in Business and/or Travel and Tourism and have associated experience

Sound knowledge and experience of teaching and assessor specifically BTEC, OCR and/or City and Guilds programmes

Hold a relevant teaching or training qualification or demonstrate a willingness to work towards achieving one

Have professional industrial experience and/or be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of business/travel and tourism in its wider context and communicate this with passion and enthusiasm

Ability to develop high quality, up to date and interactive teaching, learning and assessment materials which will inspire, motivate and captivate learners at all levels

Have a clear understanding of the needs of students and how these may be met

Experience of providing high quality pastoral care to students helping them to reach their potential and support their achievement

Knowledge of how to judge KPI’s of own success and the success of a programme

Demonstrate excellent organisation, administrative and IT skills

Desirable Criteria

In addition to Business, demonstrate specialist professional knowledge in other specialist areas (i.e. Economics, Marketing, Travel and Tourism, Enterprise, Management/leadership, Retail, Law etc.)

An ability to teach across different areas of the curriculum including IT, Computing or professional qualifications in HR and Accounting.

Have a understanding of national developments within the further and higher education sector


The candidate appointed to the post will automatically become a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme and pay contributions as determined by annual salary levels. The pension scheme is a defined benefit scheme and includes life assurance cover, and the College will also pay a contribution towards your pension.
