About our internship scheme

Interns at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring. We aim to provide our interns with an insight into the daily workings of the world's largest humanitarian organisation. The successful candidate will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during the course of their placement. There may be some ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of activity.

Your role as an intern will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross. You will take responsibility for achieving specific objectives that are agreed with you within one of the various departments across the UK. You will have a real responsibility and place in the department, bringing some of your skills and experience to the role; you will also have the chance to develop workplace skills.

About this role

This internship aims to support a small scale research project within the Refugee Support and Restoring Family Links Service. This research aims to identify different integration processes and experiences that refugees go through in relation to the different immigration routes they undertake. The intern would be supporting the team in all aspects of research including literature review, data collection, analysis and report writing. The role is based in Glasgow office but would involve travelling across the UK for data collection purposes.

Hours

This internship will last a maximum of 12 weeks volunteering up to 3-4 days each week. The volunteering hours are negotiable to balance your needs and what can be achieved in the role.

Tasks include

> Carrying out literature review in related research and policy context.

> Helping the data collection i.e. facilitating focus groups with staff, conducting interviews with service users.

> Supporting the transcription and analysis of qualitative data.

> Contributing to the writing of the final report.

What we are looking for

You need to have good interpersonal, diplomacy, communication and teamwork skills although full training can be given for any technical requirements. We keep the beneficiary at the heart of what we do, working to understand their needs and the difference we make. Also someone who is:

> An interest in refugee, migration and integration issues.

> Good communication skills, both oral and written.

> Working knowledge of social research.

> Experience in social research (desirable).

> Broad mix of analytical skills, including quantitative and qualitative skills.

> Good organisational skills.

> Ability to work as part of a team and also take own initiative.

> The ability to travel across the UK.

> The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

> Open to learning, adaptable and solution focused if things don't always go to plan.

Approximate training hours 3.5.

Minimum Induction - within 3 weeks

Has been introduced to Line Manager and role description discussed
Has been given a H&S briefing pertinent to the site they will normally be operating from
Has been familiarised with any equipment required to carry out the role
Has received any workwear, if required for the role
Has had a one-to-one induction with the Placements Coordinator
British Red Cross Foundation Course e-module (IN-FCEL)

Full Induction - within 3 months

Has attended an Intern Welcome Workshop or attended Foundation Training classroom workshops dependant on the nature of the role.
