Located at Southampton General Hospital and working in partnership with the University of Southampton, we are dedicated to providing high quality, patient centred clinical research within a state-of-the-art clinical research facility.

We currently have fantastic opportunities for dynamic and motivated children’s nurses to join our clinical research teams. If you are a nurse who takes pride and ownership in giving a high standard of child and family centred care, with or without any previous research experience, this could be a very interesting opportunity for you

Working as part of a research team, you will have regular contact with patients and healthy children volunteering to take part in research that could make a real difference to future patient care. This exciting work covers a range of studies across all clinical specialties. We undertake drug trials, studies that look at different interventions, studies that help us understand how the body works, how genes or lifestyle choices affect health, and studies that help us more fully understand chronic diseases or acute infections. The well-being, safety and happiness of the children taking part in research here is at the heart of all we do, as is our confidence that the data we provide is accurate and reproducible.

These are some of the things our research nurses like about this job (in their own words)

  • It is a real honour to be a children’s research nurse at the UHS. I work with an outstanding team and the children and families I meet make my job incredibly rewarding.
  • ‘As a new nurse to research I have enjoyed being part of a very dedicated and knowledgeable team who are always very supportive and aim to practice the highest standards of evidence based nursing. Their dedication to participants is very remarkable’
  • Being a children’s research nurse has brought me many opportunities for development – professionally and personally. No day is the same – I love the variety.
  • Research allows us to be part of the patient’s journey through their hospital admission. Research gives patients and their families the opportunity to improve future care and treatment and gives them the knowledge that something is being done to help future patients.
  • ‘seeing treatments translate from research to practice’
  • ‘being a research nurse gives me more time to spend with the patient and their families’
  • ‘opportunities to listen and learn from experts passionate about their subject – gives a real vision for the future’
  • ‘ I love it that patients love to come for their appointments with us’
  • ‘True partnership – working with patients to improve healthcare’

Following a robust induction and full research training you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, implementing studies to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient outcomes.

Our team of children’s research nurses facilitate research studies across our National Institute for Health Research infrastructure including an NIHR Welcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (CRF), and Southampton Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) .

Successful applicants can expect an excellent friendly working environment, professional support and development opportunities.

Nothing beats an informal visit though, so please contact Jane or Liz, who will be delighted to speak with you and arrange a visit.
