A vacancy has arisen for a Manufacturing Laboratory Materials Technologist in the Derby Turbine Components Manufacturing Laboratory reporting to the Laboratory Team Leader.
The Derby Laboratory Team validate and control the casting and special processes that are used to manufacture nickel superalloy turbines blades within the Derby Turbine Components facilities. They also provide metallurgical support to Cost, Quality and Delivery improvement projects, in line with the plant's BPDs.
The Manufacturing Laboratory also manage the Turbine Components Special Process audit plan and carry out audits across the domestic Turbines plants.
As a Manufacturing Laboratory Materials Technologist you will work within the Derby Laboratory and carry out metallurgical assessments of turbine blades in the as-cast and machined form, as well as providing general metallurgical support to the manufacturing facilities.
The Manufacturing Laboratory are involved with a wide range of exciting materials applications, including testing of nickel superalloys, single crystal casting, heat treatment, electro-discharge machining, TIG welding, VIPER grinding and many advanced coating processes.

- Providing technical support on material and Special Process activities.
- Carrying out metallographic analysis to validate casting, machining and coating processes.
- Carrying out special process audits (including hosting NUCAP audits).
- Interpreting design and engineering requirements and ensuring shop processes remain in compliance.
- Approval of process data cards/procedures, process or stage drawings and Methods of Manufacture.
- Supporting the development and application of the best practice Laboratory Methods.
Qualifications and experience
- Degree in metallurgy, materials engineering or equivalent.
- Experience in material/metallurgy.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity.
- Time management skills.
