City are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Optical Fibre Sensing. The appointment is available from 1 January 2018. The position is funded by Innovate UK.
Responsibilities The main responsibility of the appointee is to undertake research as specified in the Innovate UK grant. The appointee is required to build upon his/her previous experience with fibre optic sensors (FOSs) and/or optical instrumentation to develop a novel optical fibre Bragg grating (FBG)-based remote sensing system. By working closely with industrial partners, Faiveley Brecknell Willis and Sengenia Ltd, the appointee is required to integrate this sensor system developed into a railway current-collecting pantograph for its remote condition monitoring. In addition to the above, the appointee is required to develop a propriety software package, both for feedback control and for condition-based maintenance of 'smart' pantographs.
Person Specification The successful candidate is required to have expertise in optical fibre sensors and/or optical instrumentation and an ability to work closely with and report to industries involved, coordinating with academic and industrial partners.
