Embedded Hardware Electronics Team Leader in the Motors, Power and Electronic Systems Research Team.

Function Overview Sometimes, making a technological leap forward means going back to the beginning. Accountabilities

  • Lead and take technical responsibility for a growing hardware electronics team covering multiple diverse systems

  • Work with fellow Motor and Power System teams to deliver an optimum electrical system architecture for the new product, for example defining which aspects will be implemented in hardware or software.

  • Display strong creativity together with the technical expertise and the sound judgement required to understand the interdependencies between sub-systems and develop requirements accordingly.

  • Ensure the hardware team develops the concept, proves key technologies and demonstrates designs are robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for the manufacturing environment, through detailed analysis, simulation, design review down to component level and laboratory testing

  • Deliver hardware electronics solutions that meet target specifications such as cost, size, weight, functional safety and efficiency within the planned timeline; are reliable and fit for purpose; satisfy life requirements and achieve product guarantee periods; whilst comply with all relevant International Standards.

  • Ability to assess and handle component supplier relationships particularly with regard to technical negotiations, maintaining confidence in BOM and assembly costs throughout a project.

  • Work closely with the Systems Manager, Project Manager(s) and Research Managers of other engineering disciplines to drive resolution of technical and other issues in order to ensure that the product performance, reliability and cost expectations are met, all within the planned timeline of the project

  • Delivery of the hardware electronics validation test plan, including associated logistics and test equipment

  • Working with production engineering, provide technical support throughout the latter stages of development and into production

  • Assist in the recruitment and personal development of the hardware team and undertake annual appraisals of the team members

Skills Education and experience;
  • Minimum BEng/MEng degree (2:1 degree or better) in Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline.

  • Clearly demonstrate experience defining and developing complex interdependent electrical systems.

Minimum technical knowledge:

General:
  • Experience in electrical system architecture definition (i.e. hardware/software split), incorporating redundancy/diversity to achieve the desired level of functional safety

  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of low power SM PSU hardware design, fed from both low and high voltage DC.

  • Proven experience in the design of closed loop controllers for SM PSU

  • Sensor signal interfacing, amplification and filtering

  • Detailed understanding of interfacing to micro controller based systems

  • Communication interfacing (e.g. I2C, SPI, UART,)

  • Device selection - Interpretation of datasheets and knowledge of design methods to confidently select the most appropriate solution

  • PCB layout for best compromise between functional performance, cooling, cost, insulation coordination,EMC, manufacture and overall packaged volume.

  • Thermal design – e.g. component placement, specification of potting, forced air cooling

  • Design and specification of passive components, particularly inductors and transformers

  • Design tolerance analysis

  • Definition and implementation of verification test plans

  • Definition and design of hardware test systems

Design Tools:
  • To be able to lead by example engineers utilising the following toolsets

  • Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other main stream tools

  • SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix

  • System level modelling tools such as Matlab/Simulink

  • Design calculation tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Excel

Design Techniques:
  • Excellent quality engineering process understanding and application

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing / assembly techniques and resolving common issues including EMC

  • Expert knowledge of PCB layout - size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance, thermal design and the combination of power electronics and control circuitry

  • Ability to develop mathematics based models for performance prediction, design and analysis

  • Appreciation of other engineering disciplines such as electromagnetics, thermo-dynamics and mechanical engineering.

  • DFMEA, failure analysis i.e. fault tree analysis. Logical / sequential problem solving capability
