Mover Jobs Vacancy at Royal Air Force Brize Norton Jobs Details:

Movers plan and execute the movement of RAF personnel and cargo by road, rail, air and sea.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Check in passengers and cargo flying out on operations
  • Operate a forklift and other vehicles to load freight for transport
  • Plan loads using logistical IT systems

‘I’ve just arrived on Ascension Island in the South Atlantic, I’ll be taking over as the junior NCO (non-commissioned officer) responsible for the traffic team – the guys who come in from RAF Lyneham on six weeks rotation. We’ll handle all the freight and deal with the physical challenge of loading and unloading the aircraft.

Once I start work I’ll deal with all the paperwork that comes in and will be responsible for the team’s physical safety as well. That means making sure they’re aware of all the possible safety hazards and keeping an eye on their overall welfare.’

My Day ‘Before coming here I worked on the Mobility Support Flight at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire. It works like this. If a Tornado squadron goes away on exercise, we deal with sending out all their ground support kit. We also travel on operations with them, making sure they have everything they need.

It was a really busy role, often I’d walk into the operations room I’d have three days here and two days there. I travelled all the time, from the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan to Azerbaijan, Las Vegas and Canada – loads of places.’

Training

Full Time
Regular

Initial Training

Your career will start with a 10 week Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you will also learn about the RAF lifestyle and gain your Functional Skill in Mathematics and English.

Specialist Training

Your next step will be a specialist training course at the Defence Movements Training Squadron (DMTS), RAF Brize Norton, which lasts approximately 16 weeks. This course will give you a basic understanding of your role as a Logistics Mover, which includes transport procedures and regulations, aircraft loading and the handling of passengers and cargo. At the end of the course you will be on your way to gaining a Diploma at Level 2 in Providing Aviation Operations on the Ground and an Apprenticeship in Movements.

Ongoing Training/Development Opportunities

As your career progresses, the RAF will continue to train you in new skills. After further training courses, you will qualify to plan aircraft loads, calculate weights and balances and handle dangerous goods. There are also opportunities for management and leadership training and to complete a range of driving qualifications.

Your First Tour

For your first tour, you will go to the Movements Conversion Unit (MovCU) at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire for a period of mentored work. On successful completion of this phase, you will be posted on to the Air Movements Squadron (AMS) or 1 Air Mobility Wing (1 AMW) both at RAF Brize Norton. On the AMS you will load and unload aircraft, complete the related documentation and handle both passengers and cargo. You will also receive structured, competency checks, which build on the formal training you received at the DMTS. As part of 1 AMW you will be in a Force Readiness Cycle preparing or deploying for Operations anywhere in the world.

Your Future Career Prospects/Progression

You will initially join the RAF for a period of twelve years on a Notice Engagement with effect from 1 April 2015. After completing one year’s total service, you will be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman, providing you pass Trade Ability Tests and Basic Trade Training. Further promotion to the rank of corporal and beyond is on merit by competitive selection and is subject to you completing your Further Training and positive annual assessments.

Transferable Skills

The Diploma and Apprenticeship you can gain are as valuable in the civilian world as they are in the RAF – which means that whenever you decide to leave the RAF, you will be well placed to find a new job, for example:

• Freight Forwarding Agent
• Customs Agent
• Cargo Agent (Air, Land and Sea)
• Shipping and Receiving Agent
• Passenger Check-in Staff
• Airfield Operational Ramp Assistant

Initial Training

Your training will start with a Basic Recruit Training Course (BRTC) consisting of 4 weekends at your chosen RAF Reserves Squadron, followed by a 15 day residential training course at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. This training course will prepare you for service life in one of the most respected military forces in the world; it is also designed to help you tune into the military environment and way of life. As well as military training, you will learn about the core values, code of conduct and history of the RAF, as well as its unique lifestyle.

Specialist Training

Your next step will be a Basic Movements Training (BMT) specialist-training course at 4624 Squadron, which lasts for 10 months. This course will give you a basic understanding of your role as a Logistics Mover, which includes transport procedures and regulations, aircraft loading and the handling of passengers and cargo. On graduation from this course you will be promoted to Leading Aircraftman (LAC).

Ongoing Training/Development Opportunities

As your career progresses, we will continue to train you in new skills. After further training courses, you will qualify to plan aircraft loads, calculate weights and balances and handle dangerous cargo. There are also opportunities for management and leadership training and to complete a range of driving qualifications.

Operational Flights

On successful completion of your BMT course you will be posted on to the Operational Flights. Here you will consolidate your training on Flight weekends and your 15 days’ Annual Continuous Training. You will regularly work alongside your full-time counterparts, gaining valuable ‘live’ airframe experience, handling a wide variety of transport aircraft, cargo and passengers. You will also have frequent opportunities to travel abroad in RAF aircraft as part of mobile tasking teams in support of defence exercises worldwide. Fully trained personnel can expect to be mobilised in support of UK Operations.

Career Prospects/Progression

You will initially join the RAF Reserves for a period of up to 12 years. After approximately 2 years, and following successful completion of basic Trade Ability Tests (TATs), you will be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman (SAC). Further Movements Training (FMT), subject to recommendations from your Flight Commander, will make you eligible for promotion to the rank of Corporal and beyond; this is by competitive selection and subject to you obtaining positive annual appraisals.

Transferable Skills

The skills and experience you can gain as a reservist are as valuable in the civilian world as they are in the RAF – comparable civilian roles include:

• Freight Forwarding Agent
• Customs Agent
• Cargo Agent (Air, Land and Sea)
• Shipping and Receiving Agent
• Passenger Check-in Staff
• Airfield Operational Ramp Assistant

However, whilst 4624 Sqn offers you a full range of professional Movements trade skills, our parallel Through Life Development Programme teaches you skills which will not only enhance your future employability, but be highly valued by your current employer. Reservists bring so much more to a civilian organisation:
