An excellent opportunity has arisen in the Operations Department for the position of Trainee Train Planner. This is an great opening for someone wishing to pursue a career in the rail industry. The successful candidate will join a team of over 20 planners within the busy Train Planning Unit, and should be able to demonstrate a basic interest in, and an understanding of, the railway industry and its framework and operation.
The trainee will be a functioning and productive member of the team, and will be mentored and supported accordingly. You'll start your trainee programme with a full company induction and will be fully trained and supported for your railway career from then onwards!
The roles are structured to ensure that successful applicants will learn all the necessary skills to pursue a career in the train planning function, and key areas elsewhere in the railway fraternity.
The trainee will be taught essential planning skills such as train timing, resource diagramming and Access Planning management. The Trainee post will be associated with the Short Term Planning teams and will assist with the requisite amendments to the permanent timetable caused by engineering work or special events. The post-holder will be familiarised with industry train planning tools and systems, and will learn the importance of contractual relationships, customer expectation and efficiency of output.
GTR’s Short Term Planning function is highly regarded and has an ethos of responsibility and results. The structure of the Train Planning organisation ensures a constant level of management attention which will ensure the satisfactory transition from trainee to full planning post when appropriate.
Applicants must be able to highlight the following in their application:
· Strong IT skills, specifically Microsoft Excel and Word, with an ability to learn additional specialist techniques and systems as required.
· An ability to self-organise and manage tasks efficiently.
· Analytical skills, initiative and an ability to communicate effectively.
· An accurate, clear, methodical and responsible approach to work.
· Educated to a good standard, ie A Level standard.
· Keen interest in UK rail industry structure and relationships.
