BBC Design+Engineering are seeking a talented agile Project Manager to play the role of a software delivery lead for its Platform Content Distribution Services (CDS), and form part of a world-class agile software development team.
We are looking for self-starters who are fluent in agile software techniques that can work in a rapidly changing industry, tolerate ambiguity, and demonstrate problem-solving leadership with limited oversight. Experience in cutting edge agile software development, technology-driven industry, and ability to coach a team to optimize their flow using statistics is required.
Platform CDS is the team that builds & operates the content APIs that power the BBC Online. Our mission is to craft a simple & coherent set of BBC APIs that allows internal and external developers to build innovative and high scale websites and apps, rich with BBC content.
Our APIs includes comprehensive metadata for all BBC TV and Radio programmes, all our Audio & Video, our News & Sport articles and our leading edge linked data API that relates content to content through advanced concept tagging.
Platform CDS is also the home of our IP based syndication systems, covering acquisition of 3rd party market data through to distributing programmes to YouView, Sky and Virgin TV VOD systems.
The department consists of Software Engineers, Project Managers and Product Managers. We use our knowledge and experience of working with audience-facing products, new and emerging technologies, combined with creativity and collaboration across the BBC’s content divisions, to create innovative digital products and services which help to deliver reach, quality, impact, and value for the BBC.
As an agile Project Manager, you will be responsible for leading and managing multiple, concurrent software projects from initiation through to delivery. You will be part of a co-located development team, where your role will focus will on coaching teams to reach and maintaining high performance, using feedback loops to enable the teams to optimize their delivery cadence, normalize their story size and always deliver the smallest slice of work with the most value.
The successful candidate will be able to lead and manage software projects utilising best practice lean and agile principles. The candidate must take a balanced view of delivery of solutions across time, cost and quality and be able to communicate effectively to both a technical and non-technical audiences.
To lead and co-ordinate the scoping, technical requirements gathering, estimating and planning for single or multiple projects or work streams
To anticipate, manage and resolve issues, risks, dependencies and impediments that may impact on the delivery of your projects.
To coach the development team in good agile practices, and act as the Scrum Master where necessary, including facilitating retrospectives and running product demos.
To act as a first point of contact for all problems, obstacles and opportunities on a project. Issues could include supplier dependencies, infrastructure and operational capability.
To focus on working within the team to ensure flow is improved and lead-times reduced at every stage of the development process
To ensure the project backlog is captured, prioritised and delivered by the team.
To guide projects through the release pipeline, including ensuring releases have been load tested, have appropriate monitoring and comply with information security standards.
To promote continuous improvement initiatives and associated experiments with the team.
To ensure that project progress is reported in an accurate and timely manner.
To ensure that all projects and products are delivered with quality as a priority and that appropriate levels of testing and technical governance is carried out.
To support the Product Owner in delivering their Product aspirations in a timely and cost effective manner.
To keep abreast of developments in web, mobile and other interactive technologies.
To ensure enough planning is conducted to identify the correct approach and getting buy-in for delivery of critical dependencies.
To work with the Lead Project Manager on the rationalisation and delivery of the Platform CDS roadmap
The Ideal Candidate
Demonstrable experience of agile project management in a software development context.
Hands on team experience practicing Scrum, Kanban, Lean software techniques.
Experience of working towards a “Minimum Viable Product” or “Minimum Marketable Feature”.
Experience working closely on a daily basis with a Software Engineering team and Product Managers/Owners
A proven ability to manage and motivate teams
