The Cabinet Office Digital & Technology team are looking for a software developer to help grow our internal digital capability.
Youll work as part of a small cross-functional agile team, amongst digital and policy experts in the heart of the central government machine in Whitehall, delivering digital services that meet user needs and Cabinet Office policy objectives.
Our team provides delivery, consultation and assurance services throughout Cabinet Office, working with policy and operational units across the department to deliver broad digital transformation.
Our work covers a wide and interesting array of policy areas including National Security & Civil Contingencies, Electoral Registration, Fraud, Error & Debt, Honours & Appointments and others. Alongside these core policy areas, you will support Civil Service functions such as HR, Finance & Commercial, as they grow their digital capability and iterate their services.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, youll lead the development of multiple digital services, built using a variety of technology stacks, including Salesforce (Apex & VisualForce), WordPress (PHP) and others.
Youll ensure high quality code is delivered in line with project goals and delivery cycles. Youll thrive on using agile methods and enjoy working openly. Above all, youll want to make government better, which may sometimes involve challenging the status quo.
As a Developer youll:
Collaborate with technical architects, business analysts, user researchers, product managers and others to shape and build new digital services that meet user needs.
promote engineering excellence, writing clean, secure and well-tested code
be responsible for the operational stability of the products you build, and ensure the on-going robustness and resilience of those products
share knowledge of tools and techniques with your wider team, both developers and non-developers
Act as a digital ambassador across government, supporting recruitment, identifying good practices to adopt and sharing experiences.
Skills and experience
It is essential that you have demonstrable experience of:
relational databases such as SQL Server, MySQL or PostgreSQL
public cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS or GCP
object orientation including concepts such as inheritance and polymorphism
using appropriate design patterns (e.g. abstract, factory, singleton) and data structures (e.g. linked list, graph)
It is desirable that you also have demonstrable experience of:
working as part of fast paced multidisciplinary agile teams
continuous integration / continuous deployment
building accessible services compliant with W3C standards
CSS and common responsive design approaches
version control, specifically git
test driven development
infrastructure as code
QualificationsGood degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar, or equivalent industry experience.
