Eton College, which was founded by Henry VI in 1440 for 70 scholars, has over the years become a boarding school for 1300 boys. It is the largest boarding school for boys in the United Kingdom. The school welcomes boys from all backgrounds and has 130 pupils on merit based scholarships at any one time. Around 20% receive a range of bursarial financial assistance averaging 67% fee remission and over 70 boys receive 100% support. This year the School will spend £6.5m on bursaries and scholarships. This income is not from fees paid by parents but generated from our endowment and donations received. Boys joined us this year from 114 middle and prep schools spread throughout the UK and only 10% of boys come from overseas.
To support this large population of boarding pupils we have 155 full time teachers of boys as well as 100 part-time teachers, and visiting music teachers. There are over 600 other employees including domestic staff (in the boarding houses and in the central dining hall), technicians, groundsmen, administrative staff, security, cleaners and a large buildings department. The college and its immediate grounds and playing fields extend over 400 acres from the north end of Eton High Street to the M4 by Slough, bound to the east by the Thames and to the west by a railway. There are some 400 school buildings as well as the Eton College Rowing Centre at Dorney Lake, the London 2012 Olympic venue.
An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an experienced food service professional to join the College Hall front of house team as Deputy College Butler . This role will suit an individual that has an eye for detail and can confidently work and lead a team of experienced staff to achieve first class service in College Hall or other food service locations within Eton College. The ideal candidate will have a relevant hospitality qualification and at least two years’ experience working in a high quality food service operation. A detailed job description is set out below.
To assist the College Butler in the day to day running of College Hall and functions for the Foundation. To deputise for the College Butler in his absence maintaining a smooth and professional service.
The successful candidate will be working 6 days out of 7 covering the initial core hours as agreed by the Catering Director. This is a live out post and will include working split shifts and some evening/weekend work. You will be working for 40 hours per week, 40.6 weeks per year. Salary to be discussed at interview. Salaries are paid monthly via BACS. The rates of pay take full account of the paid holiday provisions described below.
Four weeks’ paid statutory holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays which are also paid. When a Bank Holiday falls during a School term there is a requirement to work on that day which is already included in the salary. You are required to take your paid holidays (including any additional days in lieu) during the school holidays, excluding the three days before the start and end of term.
