What you'll be doing
Your main responsibilities will be:
Managing the Retail Accounting function including performance management and process improvement and ensuring all key retail accounting balances and reconciliations are completed on time every period.
Working with internal audit and the retail accounting team to ensure the controls are in place to safeguard the cash and data processed
Continually reviewing the internal controls and processes associated with Retail Accounting to ensure they are efficient and effective and performed on a timely basis.
Challenging the team and the wider business on retail controls and processes associated with retail accounting
Complying with Rail Settlement Plan (RSP) Ticket Settlement Agreement control procedures, ensuring that all standards and processes are followed.
Supporting the successful transition from Lennon (revenue settlement service for the TOCs for UK passenger rail ticket sales) to Replacement Services
Safeguarding the financial and non-financial data ensuring data is secure and compliance is achieved against internal and external standards.
Working with Retail Operations to respond to queries/issues arising and in completion of periodic reporting.
Supporting the Retail and Financial Accountant and GWR Financial Accounting team when required, including the monitoring of key contracts such as the cash and data courier.
Providing operational and management information to support the management and objectives of the business.
Ad-hoc analysis work required by senior management when requested.
Who we're looking for
You'll need to:
Be knowledgeable on key accounting principles.
Have an understanding off accounting and key financial transactions.
Have management or supervisor experience within an accounting function, preferably within retail accounting/the rail sector or another complex industry.
Be knowledgeable of and have experience of managing/developing teams and improving controls and processes.
As a minimum, you'll need to have:
Experience working within a large finance team.
Experience reviewing / documenting key processes and controls.
Ability to implement process improvements, reviewing and improving existing controls.
Strong system skills, including excel, word and other MS applications (successful experience of using a variety of systems).
Strong communication, influencing and motivation skills, dealing both with financial and non-financial colleagues.
Must be professional, confident and act with a high level of integrity.
The role is based in Milford House Swindon and has line management responsibility. This role should maintain and improve controls within GWRs retail accounting function, while driving forward system and process improvements and ensuring controls are in place to safeguard GWR's assets and ensue liabilities are settled in an effective manner. The role is permanent.
