The School of Arts has vacancies for fixed-term Graduate Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellow appointments for the following modules:

Undergraduate modules:

  • The novel and its others
  • Ways of reading: Introduction to Critical Theory
  • Global Shakespeare
  • Themes in the Art and Archaeology of Africa
  • Themes in the Art and Archaeology of South East Asia
  • Themes in the Art and Archaeology of East Asia
  • Themes in the Themes in the Art and Archaeology of the Near and Middle East
  • Theory and Method in Art History and Archaeology
  • Introduction to Music Analysis
  • Presenting World Music Radio

Postgraduate modules:

  • Music in Development

These are fractional fixed-term tutorial teaching vacancies. The salary includes preparation for and delivery of tutorials as well as marking of student coursework and communication with students outside class time.

Current SOAS PhD students will be appointed as Graduate Teaching Assistants; other applicants will be appointed as Teaching Fellows.

Skills and experience

Candidates will be expected to have (or to acquire, in the case of Graduate Teaching Assistants) specialist knowledge in the subject(s) related to the contracted module, the ability to teach undergraduate/postgraduate students from a diverse background, and strong time management skills, with the ability to plan work independently and meet varied deadlines.

There are many arts degrees available bringing together scholars and students from three units at SOAS: the Department of the History of Art & Archaeology (HAA), the Department of Music and the Centre for English Studies. Annual salary will be calculated based on the number of contracted hours. Tutorials may be split, with role holders teaching all or some of the tutorials for a full year, or possibly one term only. Marking payments for assessments will normally be paid in agreement with the department.
