Facebook seeks a highly motivated and experienced team player to act as Data Protection Counsel on Facebook Ireland’s Data Protection team. This position is an outstanding opportunity for any candidate that thrives on tackling some of today’s toughest and important legal challenges, working with the most talented people around, in this cutting edge and exciting area of law. The successful candidate will have diverse experience in this field of law within the European context, and in particular enjoy and have experience in the challenge of applying complex and evolving legal frameworks to new and innovative products and services. The role will focus on providing legal advice to internal product, operations, policy, sales and other business teams in order to identify and mitigate legal risk in all phases of product development and across business operations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience advising on Data Protection compliance and will be eager to roll up their sleeves and find solutions to support the company’s innovation. The role requires good judgment, a strong work ethic, and a keen interest in learning about new technologies and areas of the law. This role may be located in Dublin, London or Hamburg. This role will require some international travel.


  • Analyse products, policies and initiatives to provide practical legal assessment for products across multiple jurisdictions
  • Provide policy, product, engineering, sales and other business teams with legal advice on data protection laws and regulations
  • Coordinate with public policy and communications colleagues on external communication, policy development, and enforcement decisions
  • Provide full service support to wider legal team on European regulatory and litigation matters and liaising with regulators
  • Contribute to and provide data protection training and awareness programs
  • Monitor and respond to developments in data protection and information security (i.e., new laws, regulations, important judgements, regulatory guidance, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Qualified to practice law in at least one EU jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 3-4 years of relevant post-qualification legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience
  • In-depth knowledge of legal issues in the area of the operation of online social media platforms including an excellent understanding of data protection law
  • Sharp focus on multi-tasking, details, and organisational skills
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to get the job done
  • Ability to independently, quickly and accurately assess legal, practical and business risks in a fast-paced environment and make sound judgments
  • Excellent problem-solving, written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and an absolute commitment to professionalism and collegiality
  • Attention to detail and strong drafting ability that can be used in a commercial setting with business stakeholders
  • First rate technical abilities with a strong knowledge of and interest in emerging technologies and devices with a demonstrated ability to find pragmatic and creative solutions to business issues and provide concise and business-focused legal advice.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising clients on risk assessment and mitigation across technology product platforms
  • Prior experience working with internet or technology companies a plus
  • Experience working within a global legal team a plus
  • Knowledge of, or fluency in, other European languages a plus.
