Researchers in the vaccine epidemiology group (VERG) at Imperial College led by Professor Grassly work on the epidemiology of infectious diseases and the impact of vaccination at the individual (immunogenicity, efficacy) and population level (effectiveness, impact). We are particularly interested in oral vaccines against enteric infections such as poliovirus and rotavirus. We have worked extensively on the epidemiology of poliovirus, contribute to Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) policy and are the WHO collaborating institute on polio data analysis and modelling. The near eradication of wild-type polioviruses has been achieved by mass campaigns with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). However, to achieve eradication of all polioviruses, the GPEI must finally withdraw OPV because it can, albeit rarely, cause outbreaks of poliomyelitis associated with vaccine-derived poliovirus. The GPEI endgame strategy is therefore focused on a carefully orchestrated, stepwise removal of OPV serotypes and global introduction of inactivated vaccine. This has raised a number of questions about the best use of these vaccines in routine immunisation and mass campaigns (including in outbreak response), how to monitor and improve campaign coverage, and optimal surveillance approaches. We address these questions working closely with the GPEI and country programmes using statistical and mathematical model-based analysis of GPEI surveillance and programme data (available to us via the Polio Information System). Ultimately, we must ensure that polio eradication strategy is based on the best available scientific evidence so as to maximise the chance of successful eradication in the next few years.
We are seeking 2 excellent scientists to join the vaccine epidemiology research group as Research Assistant/Associate. You will carry out research on the epidemiology of infectious diseases with a particular focus on poliovirus and the effectiveness of different vaccination and surveillance strategies.
You will have an MSc (for appointment to Research Assistant) or a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) in epidemiology, statistics or biology with strong quantitative skills and the ability to code in R or a similar programming language.
This is a full time, fixed term post available until 30 June 2019 in the first instance.
