People Like You is a 4-year Wellcome Trust-supported Collaborative Project in the Medical Humanities awarded to Professors Sophie Day (Goldsmiths, Anthropology), Celia Lury (Warwick University, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies) and Helen Ward (Imperial College London, School of Public Health). It aims to establish the cultural significance of new methods for specifying and portraying people precisely across a range of settings: health care and data science and selected practices in digital culture. We will develop an interdisciplinary figural analysis in collaboration with three creative practitioners (poetry, portraiture and digital media) to put the person back into personalisation and relate people to the data collected from them and on their behalf.
This post is one of 3 postdoctoral research associates sought for the project (at Goldsmiths, Warwick and Imperial College, see jobs.ac.uk).
Under the day-to-day guidance of Professor Helen Ward, you will conduct research into data science at Imperial College Academic Health Sciences Centre, ideally combining an ethnographic approach with an understanding of the methods used in data science. This will inform a critical understanding of how biological and other data from individuals are aggregated, processed, analysed and reported in the process of creating new categories of people like you to inform treatment and prediction. You will collaborate closely with the project team on personalisation in breast cancer services, HIV services and digital culture as well as public-facing elements of the project such as our website, events and meetings.
It is essential that the successful candidates have a PhD in a relevant field such as social (e.g. science and technology studies, anthropology, sociology) or data science (e.g. computer science, AI, machine learning) ; proven experience in a relevant research area and experience of organising, undertaking and analysing empirical research. They will need a track record of publications and collaborative work in their field.
This is a full-time, fixed term post for 4 years from 8 January 2018 based at the St Marys Campus , Paddington . Applications for part-time/ flexible working will be considered.
