Greater Manchester Police is one of the UK's largest police forces and is responsible for keeping people safe across more that 1,200 sq km. The Force covers the Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan areas. GMP's officers and staff work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to keep almost three million people safe.
You will assist the Custody Sergeant with duties relating to the detention, security, welfare and administration of pre and post charge detained persons in police custody. You will assist in the maintenance and security of the Custody Suit together with assisting in the booking in of evidence of detainees, in line with procedures outlined in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and force policy.
You will have carried out duties that involve dealing with members of the public working in a reactive environment, managing conflict, dealing with difficult clients and handling confidential and sensitive information. You will have experience of collating and examining information together with keyboard experience and knowledge of computer applications.
The post can involve physical restraint and the training will include up to 6 days of Personal Safety Training. You must be in good health and have a good level of general fitness. A medical assessment may be required after submission and review of the Pre-employment Medical Questionnaire.
You must be prepared to attend relevant training courses, including an initial six week training course upon appointment which includes the Officer Safety Training. The mandatory training is scheduled to commence 11th March 2019 for 6 weeks.
You will be contracted to work at a particular Custody site, where it is expected you will be based for the majority of the time. However, from time-to-time, it may be necessary for you to work at an alternative site temporarily for operational reasons. Currently the vacancies are based force wide.
You will be required to work a 24/7 rotational shift pattern for which the following allowances are paid:
Weekend Enhancement - 14.14%
Shift Allowances - 20%

Greater Manchester Police have been informed of potential personal tax implications for members of the 1987 Police Pension Scheme, who retire and take a pension between the ages of 50 and 54 inclusive and then take up employment as a Police Staff member. Members of the police pension scheme whose age is between 50 and 54 who are re-employed as a Police Staff member have to meet certain conditions to keep their PPA and to protect against personal tax liability charges on any payments paid before the age of 55. One of those conditions is that a break of at least 1 month is required where the re-employment is ‘materially different’. However, if the role is not deemed to be ‘materially different’ then a 6 month break is required.
