Research Associate Novel Lightweighting Approaches And Automated Manufacturing For Wind Turbine Blades Jobs Vacancy at University Bristol Bristol Jobs Details:

An exciting post-doctoral research position is available to conduct research on a novel composites design concept for ultra-efficient wind turbine blades. This full-time post will be funded for 12 months with a view to extending for a further 12 months should the funding be awarded, starting as soon as possible, and will be based in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bristol. The successful candidate will join the Bristol Composite Institutes (ACCIS) and its research team dedicated to wind turbine structures. Flagship activities within the group include the Wind Blade Research Hub, in partnership with the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the nationally funded SUPERGEN Wind programme and the partnership with Vestas Wind Systems A/S, a world-leading provider of wind power and services. The latter partnership was established in 2009 and acts as a focus for composites research activities, liaising closely with Vestas research capabilities across the globe, but particularly at their Blade Research Centre on the Isle of Wight.
This project will pursue the application of a new winding-based manufacturing method for composite structures which creates ultra-efficient truss structures from low cost feedstocks using a low cost and scalable process. The goal is to use the structural efficiency of these trusses to create significant weight (and therefore cost) reductions in wind turbine blades and by extension in the numerous turbine components whose mass and cost scale directly with blade mass. The successful candidate will undertake an ambitious, multi-faceted research program which will conceive of, design, analyse, and optimise wound truss structures for wind turbine applications. In parallel, technology demonstrators will be developed to show the feasibility of the concepts and to validate the analysis methods.
This position is being offered on a full time, Fixed Term Contract for 12 months (with a view to extending for further 12 months should the funding be awarded).
